What's this all about?

“Good morning!” he said at last. “We don’t want any adventures here, thank you! You might try over The Hill or across The Water.”

Bilbo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit

The plan is to do one new thing every week, for a whole year and blog about it. Continue reading

Giving it away for free

“I never believed in Santa Claus because I knew no white dude would come into my neighborhood after dark.”

Dick Gregory

You know what I never do?  Give money to panhandlers. I know some people do and I guess that’s awfully nice of them; but I just don’t trust that they aren’t going to buy drugs with it.

“There is no better high than discovery.”

Edward O. Wilson

At the risk of sounding like an alcoholic, for week 4 I decided to go one whole week without alcohol; which is something I probably haven't done in the last 10 years. Continue reading

Vancouver Brewery Tour

“God has a brown voice, as soft and full as beer.”

Anne Sexton

This week my friends and I will be checking out some Vancouver microbreweries. The great thing about microbreweries is that they brew beer in small batches, using natural processes and ingredients, making some unique and flavourful alternatives to mass-produced products.

Luck of the Draw

“I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt

I’m off to buy my very first lotto ticket. Wouldn’t it be terribly clever if I won? Continue reading

Stick a Needle in It

“What is a soul? It’s like electricity – we don’t really know what it is, but it’s a force that can light a room.”

Ray Charles

Dashing out of my work towards Burrard street, I hop on the 22 Knight/MacDonald bus which takes me across town, over the Granville bridge with its glorious view of English Bay, winding through Kitsilano and up into Kerrisdale, to StudioHealth clinic where Liz greets me warmly and invites me in to my first acupuncture treatment.

Two Concerts in One Week

“Live music is better”

Neil Young

This week I went to two concerts. By way of context, I've probably gone to five concerts in the last ten years, so two in one week is definitely unprecedented. For whatever reason, as much as I enjoy music if it happens to be playing, I never seek it out – which means I don't buy it and I don't go to shows. Continue reading

No Social Media

“Social media has given us this idea that we should all have a posse of friends when in reality, if we have one or two really good friends, we are lucky.”

Brene Brown

Lately I’ve started to wonder if I might be addicted to social media; so this week I’m going to take a break. Continue reading

Beer Brewing Class

“Give a man a beer, he’ll drink for a day. Teach a man to brew, he’ll be drunk the rest of his life.”

A 2.5 hour beer brewing course for two for only $40! Who could resist that?

Scott, i really like the thought that the discovery tadalafil from canada pharmacy king says it does and the viagra 554. Require civil law and areas viagra information of the program. Macaron Making Class

“There was a mood of magic and frenzy to the room. Crystalline swirls of sugar and flour still lingered in the air like kite tails. And then there was the smell – the smell of hope, the kind of smell that brought people home.”

Sarah Addison Allen, The Girl Who Chased the Moon

I went to my first baking class this week – a macaron making class to be exact. Continue reading

Sensory Deprivation

“Silence is a source of great strength.”

Lao Tzu

Removing the last of my clothing and placing it on the bench, I mold the silicone earplugs into my ears and step into the shower for a quick rinse. Emerging from the shower I open the door to the tank and peer into the darkness tentatively. Gently lowering myself into the shallow, warm water I reach up and close the trap door and the room goes pitch black. Continue reading

Phone game

“If Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.”

Marcus Brigstocke

This week I decided to play my first game on my iPhone. Exciting stuff I know; but hey I warned you, not every week can be a big adventure.  Continue reading

Movie Date with Myself

“A good movie can take you out of your dull funk and the hopelessness that so often goes with slipping into a theatre; a good movie can make you feel alive again, in contact, not just lost in another city. Good movies make you care, make you believe in possibilities again

Pauline Kael, For Keeps: 30 Years at the Movies

This week I go see a matinee alone. Continue reading

Make a Cake

“Cakes are special. Every birthday, every celebration ends with something sweet, a cake, and people remember. It’s all about memories.”

Buddy Valastro

Today I bake my first cake; The Ultimate Lemon Bundt Cake to be exact. While I do know how to bake – I’ve even made chocolate chip cookies on occasion – I’ve never made a proper cake before. Continue reading

Caribbean Brunch

“Instead of telling the world what you're eating for breakfast, you can use social networking to do something that's meaningful.”

Edward Norton

This week we're off to Calabash Bistro for some Caribbean brunch because hey, sometimes the most challenging thing you want to do with your week is eat a delicious breakfast.

Making Spot Prawns

“Eat with the fingers, drink with the nose.”

Joseph Delteil

Lifting the lid off the bucket, I carefully pull back the paper towel to reveal the chilled spot prawns on ice beneath. As I contemplate picking one up, a prawn grabs on to my finger and I shriek as I shake him loose and close the lid.

This week I’m preparing BC spot prawns for the first time. Continue reading

Scary Movie

“I'm going to keep my eyes open because I think it'll be scarier that way.”

So, tonight I'm watching a scary movie. Because I NEVER watch scary movies. Because they scare me and then I can't sleep… for months. The last scary movie I watched was It, which messed me up pretty bad and had me going out of way to avoid storm drains – and bathroom drains – for many years to come.  Continue reading

Extreme Air Park

“There is a girl in New York City / Who calls herself the human trampoline / And sometimes when I'm falling, flying / Or tumbling in turmoil I say / Oh, so this is what she means / She means we're bouncing into Graceland”

Paul Simon, Graceland

This week Jaimie and I are off to Extreme Air Park in Richmond to do an AIRobics class. Continue reading

Canada Day

“A Canadian is merely an unarmed American with health care.”
John Wing

This week I’m off to celebrate Canada Day at Canada Place. It promises to be a crowded event, full of excited, screaming kids and people wearing cheesy shirts and hats. Basically, an absolutely deplorable experience with very little redeeming value. Continue reading

Making Tea Gong Fu Cha Style

“When tea becomes ritual, it takes its place at the heart of our ability to see greatness in small things. Where is beauty to be found? In great things that, like everything else, are doomed to die, or in small things that aspire to nothing, yet know how to set a jewel of infinity in a single moment?”

Muriel Barbery, The Elegance of a Hedgehog

This week Shannon and I are off to The Chinese Tea Shop for a lesson in the Gong Fu Cha tea making method. Continue reading

Meet A New Human

“A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten and the future worth living for.”

This week I’m off to meet a new human. Continue reading

Spa Day

“We spend most of our time and energy in a kind of horizontal thinking. We move along the surface of things [but] there are times when we stop. We sit still. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper.”

James Carroll

Today is my Spa Day; my day of ultimate indulgence and relaxation. Continue reading

Does the internet really know who I am?

“I like a woman with a head on her shoulders. I hate necks.”
Steve Martin

It’s an overcast Sunday and Emrys is off to work. Coffee in hand, I have the house to myself and conditions are just right for an introspective morning of Facebook personality quizzes. I’ve resisted their allure for years but the fact is that I’m 34 years old and there are some important things I should probably figure out. All of which begs the question: why haven’t I taken advantage of this resource sooner?

Blogging in the sky about Bard on the Beach

“If we shadows have offended,
Know but this and all is mended.
That you have but slumbered here,
While these visions did appear,
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding, but a dream.”

William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

And we’re off to Costa Rica! The first flight of our 17 hour odyssey left Vancouver at 5:20pm on Saturday and Emrys and I are now in the San Francisco airport awaiting our 12:27am flight to Houston. Continue reading

Chocolate Tour!

“Happiness. Simple as a glass of chocolate or tortuous as the heart. Bitter. Sweet. Alive.”

Joanne Harris, Chocolat

It’s only 6am but I’ve been awake for a while now. As the first rays of sun touch down through the jungle canopy overhead, the sounds of roosters crowing, dogs barking, squirrels chattering, tropical birds twittering and howler monkeys, well howling, fills the morning air. Continue reading

Learn to Drive

“This morning, as I was driving to work, I mistook a big brown box on the side of the road for a deer. It was dark, and I swerved at the last second, and even though it wasn’t a deer, I still managed to nail that son of a bitch.”

Jarod Kintz

Driving into the Andes

I did it. I picked up a driving booklet and I’m reading it. In case you didn’t know, I’m 34 years old and I don’t have a drivers license. Continue reading

Christmas Crackers

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more!”

Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This week I’m making Christmas crackers! My friend Raeanne is having a cracker making party at her house on Sunday and I’m pretty excited to attend. I love the idea of giving fun, little gifts; especially ones that come with a bang! Continue reading

Say Goodbye

“Courage is found in unlikely places.”

me2This is my last post; it’s time to say goodbye! It’s been a great year of firsts and a pleasure sharing it all with you.

The premise of my project was simple: every week for one year do something new, something I’ve never done before and write about it. The goal: to shake things up a bit, to get unstuck and feel more alive.

Sometimes I specifically sought out the novelty of an experience; other times shit just happened to me so I wrote about it. In the end, I’ve done some pretty cool things I might not have otherwise attempted and have come to realize that I am capable of infinitely more.

It’s December 31st today and as we sit poised to enter a new year, I’m looking back with fondness over 2014’s adventures and forward with excitement for all there is to come. While I’m not exactly sure what my next project will be, it seems unlikely that I’ll be able to resist the urge to create something. My thanks to everyone who supported Never Done That and a special thanks to my editor and photographer, Emrys Horton.

Here then is a quick review of what we did in 2014, in case you missed any of it – and if it strikes your fancy, I’d love to hear which adventures meant something to you:
